Chapter Seventeen

It was surprisingly easy for my father to transplant the entire chunk of the barrier lands into the Middle Land’s— inside a small antechamber just outside of the throne-room, in fact.

Either it was a new room, or a room that everyone had conveniently all forgotten existed. No one was going to say anything.

An impressive display of power.

Even for a god.

Angel.

Whatever.

I really needed to clarify what exactly he was. It was starting to get confusing.

Not that it hadn’t been confusing all along.

It terrified me that he could work all this incredible Magic, but he couldn’t do a thing to help my mother and sisters.

“It’s not living Magic— it’s ghost Magic,” he kept repeating.

I think we all understood that, but it was hard to accept— especially as, despite our best efforts— they were all beginning to fade.

Being in the Middle Lands— or, perhaps, being so close to Faerie— seemed to be having an effect on my powers, on top of everything else. Because of this, I tried to avoid using them at all, but there were some things that were completely involuntary.

Like catching every single tapestry in the banquet hall on fire at once when Timothy’s hand brushed mine during dinner.

That was pretty humiliating.

Right after the flames were extinguished and the tapestries salvaged as much as possible— I overheard Queen Honora say that some of them were hundreds of years old, which did not make me feel any better— Lenus cornered me.

“It’s time you learned to control your powers,” he said. “I know that lessons are far from your mind right now, but as long as you continue on in this manner you are a danger to yourself and anyone around you.”

I grimaced. I wasn’t hearing anything new here— I’d been told over and over again that I was powerful and dangerous.

But it was hard to believe when I had struggled with my power for my entire life. I wasn’t strong like my mother— I was a failure, a disappointment.

“You’re like a toddler carrying explosives,” Lenus said. “Hit with the right trigger, you and everything around you would go up in flames.”

I went cold. I was sure my face had just turned completely white.

Because that had already happened, once.

“I did,” I admitted reluctantly. “Owen Dark threw some Magic at me and I was unbalanced. I- I burst into flames. The only reason I am alive is because Timothy grabbed onto me and helped me remember enough to get under control again.”

Lenus’s face turned grim. “You must learn to take your powers seriously. This is not something you can ignore and have vanish completely. As time goes on you will only grow stronger and stronger. A touch today set a whole room aflame. Tomorrow it could be a glance or a word. You must treat yourself as you would a weapon— a sword— with respect and knowledge.”

I bent my head, acknowledging that he was right.

“You should have come to me as a child,” he continued. “So you could have been properly trained.”

“That’s why Mom bound my powers— so you wouldn’t be able to find me and take me away,” I said.
